The sound of rain pounding on the roof has got to be the most soothing sound ever. It's been raining non-stop for the past week. Some people get annoyed, some get depressed, some get lonely. Me? I just enjoy it. Ever since I was a kid, rain calmed me down. I remember one night, when I was eight or nine, my mother wasn't back from work yet, it must have been 11 or 12 at night, it was the latest I'd ever been left alone. It started raining, I grabbed a chair and sat by the window for hours, until my mother came home. I just sat and watched the raindrops pound the cars in the street below. Watched the drops explode as they hit the pavement, the house across the street, the glass two inches from my face. There was nothing else in the world, but me and the millions of little balls of water falling from the sky.

I too love the rain. It does indeed have a soothing effect and it is always easier to fall asleep, as if the droplets wash away the stresses and cares one might have had.

Your recollections of the calming effects of rain on you as child waiting for your mother, struck a chord with me. Though I grew up in cities in Ontario, I have lived in smaller towns in BC for almost 40 years. I had forgotten the way I used to watch the rain pound the city streets for hours, --the way the droplets distort the cityscape outside a window so magically, mixing the colors and the light and shadows, and blurring the images , changing the familiar scenes to surreal and fantastic.

Rain changes the smell too, a gathering sweetness that cannot be imitated by any man-made perfume -- and dulls the familiar city sounds with the sounds of its patter, and hissing of city traffic.

Though I still love the rain ( sounding on my tin roofed cabin ) and the fresh clean scent it leaves ( especially when mingled with pine and cedar ), --I had forgotten those long-ago-nose-pressed-to-the-windowpane days of childhood.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Silver

This was definetly different from the usual stuff posted on here, but the description was incredible, bringing everything to life.

I also feel the same way about rain, I don't know what it is but when its pouring outside and i'm laying in bed listening to the drops hit the roof it makes me feel safe for some reason. My favorite though, has to be before a huge thunderstorm in the summer where you actually witness the sky turn from blue to black, and the gusts blowing in gather up dirt and what not. Then the rain hits and for 15 minutes or so all you hear is the rain. After the rain even the hottest days cool down, and everything just feels "cleaner".
