Transparent WIP by Transparent

Walking into the darkened room, he wouldn’t have seen her unless he was expecting her to be there. Silently, he moved toward her bed and sat down in the chair beside it. He would wait until she woke on her own, she would need her sleep.

About an hour later, she woke with a start only to meet the gaze of an unfamiliar man in her room. She reached for the call button, but she couldn’t seem to find it. As she turned to look, he held it up and wagged it side to side. “Looking for something?” he whispered. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. She took in a deep breath and readied her scream when the man jumped up and put his palm across her mouth.

“I’m going to remove my hand. If you ever want to see your son again, I suggest you refrain from screaming.” the man said as he slowly moved his hand from the woman’s mouth. “Now that I have your attention, I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Zxander Jourenx, and I am here to save your life. You are Natasha Caine, am I correct?” The woman nodded and opened her mouth to speak, but Jourenx stopped her.

“Can you walk?” he asked her.

“I… I suppose if I have to, yes.”

“You’re going to have to, though hopefully not long. Get dressed. And try to be as quiet as possible. We are going to try and avoid them if we can.”

“Them?”

“Yes, them. Did you really expect there to be only one? I’ll be back”

Without waiting for her to protest, he dashed out the door into the corridor. He stopped only once in front of the facility map to find the NICU. Jourenx knew that baby Caine wouldn’t be lying peacefully with the others, nor did he expect him to be. But one could hope.

When he finally reached the NICU, Jourenx decided that going through to the back room would probably yield the best results. Walking past all the newborn babies, he made sure to look at every name tag, just in case there was a mistake. When he was sent here tonight, he was told to recover the Transparent and it’s mother, at any cost. He was hoping that they were wrong, that there wasn’t another Transparent, but his hopes were fleeting faster than he could control. He reached the back of the room without finding a “Baby Boy Caine” tag on any container. On the wall was a door that read “EMPLOYEES ONLY” and Jourenx opened it. He would be in enough trouble if he was found, anyway.

The door led to a darkened stairwell. Looking down to determine depth, he saw a blue light flashing below. He knew he had found where he was looking for. What he saw next was far beyond what he had expected.
