    dots'Tears of a Clown'- Part 12dots

Five minutes later and Jenny reappeared through the kitchen door, a cup of hot chocolate steaming in her hands, silently she placed the mug on the table in front of the sofa and crouched at Chloe’s feet. “Come on Chlo, what’s happened? You can trust me you know, I never let you down before.” Her soothing voice seemed to subdue the tears that had been threatening to spill from Chloe’s eyes “Oh god, it’s such a mess. I don’t love him, Tom I mean, I still love Sam. I always have done. Tom has just been a security blanket and yes he’s been there for me- but I don’t love him, and I reckon he knows it. When Sam cheated on me it broke my heart Jen, I didn’t know how I was supposed to breathe, eat, sleep… live; my entire world had come crumbling down. I couldn’t even stay at the Uni, I couldn’t see them walking through the halls every day, watch them holding hands and kissing, hear them laugh at the same jokes he told me and share the same secrets.” Her voice trailed off again and the tears threatened to make an appearance, Jenny just sat looking up at her, slowly she began to shake her head “But…But, he never cheated on you Chlo, he didn’t do it. I understand so much more now but you have to believe me, Sam was just as broken as you were. One day you were there and the next you’d vanished. Please believe me Chlo.” Standing up, Jenny took the cup from Chloe’s hands and folded her in a tight embrace, she could feel the sobs shudder through her fragile shoulders and Jenny gripped her tighter. “He didn’t cheat, he didn’t do it, didn’t do it, didn’t, didn’t….” Jenny held back her own tears as she heard the repeated phrase and instead she started to stroke her old friend’s hair. “Don’t worry Chloe, I will fix it all for you, I will fix it all.” Slowly Chloe started to fall asleep and Jenny stood up, making her way into the kitchen she picked up the cordless phone and dialled a number “Hello Sam, I know it’s late, but about Lee’s birthday. I’ve got an idea of what to get him as a present, just wanted to run it by you first. After all, he is your son…”
