Magician Musicians

To little girls, such as myself
I could not perceive the difference between
the pronunciation of
‘magician’ and ‘musician’.

Now, I understand
this misunderstanding much better.
For when I was a little girl
I would watch magic shows
with childlike interest
—maybe a bit too much interest.

I would also watch musicians
—on PBS, mostly—
cast their spells with a magic wand.
They played that wand upon a string
And I knew I had been deceived—
deceived into believing that music
was magic, simply an illusion—
something I would never understand.
And so what did I do?
I set out to comprehend
the incomprehensible—
the tricks in the musicians black hat.

But I was silly, very, very silly!
For little girls can never understand such things!
And I will always be
that little girl.
