Degrees of a Dying Dream -------------------------------------------
Behind the closed doors of the classroom
It is easy to fool yourself
Tell yourself
That it is the "self"
That truely matters
Step into the bump and grind though
and that illusion soon shatters
I see masses rushing towards
social evolution
Screaming,
"Sign up now, for the new revolution"
But at the end of the day
You have exercised no solution
Start a campus movement
and earn extra credit
toward your fifty-thousand dollar education
and you still don't get it
All of the banter is nothing more than theory
I look to the horizon
and see only dreary
While society crumbles and bursts
at seams that are weak and weary
All of your thought provoking words
Are like dead leaves
Falling to the floor
So you can take your bullshit
and leave that at the door
How can you claim to have the answers
When we don't even know the question anymore?
And
Fail to see
That the whole world is knocking on hell's door.
We all just love the junior year
social commentary
While another person
is prematurely burried
by the system that programmed them
Trainned and bred
to compete and kill
Sell out your dignity
on the newest thrill
Snuff out the man standing next to you
if it will get you to where you have to go
We would rather do that
Than shake the hands of someone
that we don't know
We close ourselves off from each other
but WE claim to be enlightened though?
There is no more sense of community
Only each person's growing sense
of self indulgant reality
All of that education
and you failed to learn
That life in its merit
Has it's own lessons to earn
There is no chapter
under that text book cover
That teaches us
how to be deccent to one another
So here is a new lesson for you
Free of charge
It's all about the nature
Of society at large
Take a moment to ponder,
That man's only natural preditor
is himself
and that the way you live your life
is less important
than the accumulation of wealth;
that all of the suffering in the world
takes a back seat
to us fullfilling ourselves
So, you've earned your degree
and I guess that should impress me
Though it has failed to give you insight
Into the nature of the status quo
and what is morally right
If you are going to be so bold
as to say
You are going to change the world
You can start be recognizing
and realizing
that if you want to get to the core
we have to start by changing ourselves
and stop closing all of these doors.
This poem is so true. We pay thousands of dollars to state universities and colleges, but for what really. A huge percentage of college students nowadays are all drop outs. I'm sure this isn't your message though. But I was very compelled by this poem. I really enjoyed it. And at that this poem is going to my favorites. I'll show my friends. It's true that people are taught and brought up to believe all of these theories and techniquel bull[censored] inside of this world, but they know the true answeres, and you are right, how can they know the answere when they don't even know the questions anymore. What is morally right isn't what anyone cares anymore. And I like how you pointed out that the suffering all takes the backseat, as if no one cares about the hurt and the pain inside of the world anymore. I enjoyed the write.
