Global warming, a slow and natural occurrence in nature that makes Earth habitable, has increased drastically over several years. Human activities are the biggest factor in the world’s increasing threat. Many activities emanate greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere that would other wise exit into to outer space.
One effect of global warming, the melting of the polar ice caps, has already begun. Once the polar ice caps have completely melted away, a chain reaction of several catastrophic events will occur. The new amount of water gained will cause the global sea level to rise above normal. Islands, like Hawaii, would diminish under rising water levels along with the islands’ inhabitants. Flooding along major coastlines will also occur. Major crops would be destroyed due to flooding which would cause a wide spread shortage of different food supplies.
The extinction of many species is a fairly high possibility as well. Studies of behavioral pattern of animals show large population of animals shifting north and to higher altitude areas. A study of butterflies indicates that warmer southern areas are becoming far less populated than cooler northern areas showing a vast migration. Marine life studies also show that the creatures are reacting considerably to the warming of the water. Scientists predict that some marine species will die or become extinct due to increase in water temperature while species that prefer warmer climates will flourish greatly. Coral Reefs, which are vital to the ecosystem, are predicted to die off as well.
Vegetation in different areas is to be effected too. A high increase of precipitation will cause an expansion of wooded plant populations. Also, vegetation commonly found in tundra areas will turn in to temperate, deciduous evergreen forests. Creatures inhabiting these areas will have to adapt to such drastic changes or die off, which could cause a severe decrease of animal population among the world.
Global warming is a force not to be reckoned with. If changes in the daily lives of many do not come about, the effects of such will be highly devastating.
