    -------------------------------------------

There once was a beggar who wandered on foot,
and nothing he owned but his rags and a sack,
that was empty and filled with a myriad holes,
still he carried it lightly upon is bent back.

To a town once he came and proclaimed in the square:
"come and buy, come and buy my right wondrous wares"
people laughed and threw stones, "what a fool!" so they jeered
"all he has are the rags he is in, how he dares!"

but he stood firm and ducked as the pebbles whizzed by
and spoke proudly to all those assembled about
"do you know, foolish townsmen, what lies in this sack?
I will tell you, and then you will not idly shout.

the voice of the sea-wind, the mute frown of death,
the stare of Medusa, the poet's last sigh,
the breath of a dragon, a maid's wistful glance,
the smile of a dolphin, the infant's first cry"

they stared and they stared, and still nobody dared
to purchase these wares from quite exotic lands,
but then with a small voice a child stepped forth,
"the smile of a dolphin for a ring in my hands."
