    dotsthe ladderdots

over frozen lakes and mountain stone I will drag my heavy goal
catching glimpses of divng sparks at the end of every road
clawing toward a higher post than the one to which I知 bound
looking up this same old ladder until I'm neath the ground

oh, midnight seas and rocky shores, I've surely done my work
but on rougher seas and further coasts I'll surely prove my worth
I'll sail away toward a fire sun until the sun goes down
at the bottom of an endless ladder until I'm neath the ground

yes,I've piled a pile of shiny coins to needle through the clouds
but in the cave there lies a diamond that'll truly make me proud
a ringless finger on a ruby gem and the gleam of a golden crown
looking up the same old ladder until I'm 'neath the ground

to die without name or cause and to leave no thing behind
I'll be a footprint on the ocean's floor or a mosquito in the tide
so I'll steal the clock and from a mountaintop I'll whisper to the clouds
at the bottom an endless ladder until I'm neath the ground

when the winter clouds do separate and the gates are finally swung
every dog will be cold and limp under the heat of the summer sun
under sweeping rains and glassy skies I roam from town to town
at the bottom of the same old ladder until I'm 'neath the ground

and the letters that I meant to send will be stuck between my teeth
and lodged inside my swollen throat will be the words I'll never speak
if you see her soon, remember me tell her where I can be found
at the bottom of the same old ladder until I知 創eath the ground

yes, I値l be climbing toward a higher post than the one to which I知 bound
at the bottom of the same old ladder
    until I知 創eath the ground
    until I知 創eath the ground
