    Description:
I'm in recovery and working the 12 steps. Emotions flood me and I have to feel them without a crutch, so I sometimes spew chunks of words... this came up.

    -------------------------------------------

    Defenses are down,
    prone to an attack;
    Try to rise above -
    and fall further back . . .

    Back, back, back -
    to the very frightful place,
    Deep, deep, deep -
In the bleak familiar space . . .

    Where thoughts become reality,
Life is too much to bear,
Stumbling in the dark void -
    Of the light you're unaware . . .

    Keep pushing forward
    Seek and you shall find
    While climbing the steps -
The enemy lies within the mind.

This has a lot of heart and soul in it. As my eyes chugged over each line, I felt like the poem itself was controlling me. Like a game of Simon says, or the 12 step program. The images are stark, but simple, and they move smoothly with the rhythm. The last line, after being thrown back and forward, into the void of darkness and out of the realm of reality, sends a cold chill down the reader's spine. No matter how far you climb, your past will always stain your mind. Deep stuff, you have talent.

    Take it easy.
