There is a hobby at which I recently was able to work with a pro. This is not a simple hobby, and takes much talent. Honestly I have attempted this hobby only twice, once when I was seven or eight, and then I came back to it only about a month ago. It requires an extreme amount of concentration on the movement of your hands, creating the right texture of the wood, and the proper appearance, and being careful of all your movements so as to not get dust in your eyes. Learning involves coming to understand what the right tool is, and then holding the tool in the correct manner without cutting yourself. It’s such a precise art, that you must shave off what you don’t want or your work of art is over. However as my skills progressed it became more like a smooth whittling motion. Though I can only work on this hobby in a cold basement or garage, it’s the fun of the experience, and sometimes it’s the smell of the balsa wood that I’m whittling that I enjoy. |
