“Hey, Annie, I thought of a perfect joke that we could play on Dad to loosen him up a bit,” said Ned.
“Just as long as it wasn’t like last time! Remember?” exclaimed Annie.
“What happened last time?” asked Annie’s best friend, Meg.
“Well let’s go sit down in the living room because the story is kinda’ long,” stated Ned. “It all commenced on April Fools day,” continued Ned. “We thought Dad was acting way too uptight and needed to loosen up a little. Annie, here, got the bright notion to put vodka in Dad’s coke at supper, not realizing that he had a business meeting to go to after dinner. We speculated that Dad would watch the Angels lose again and start ranting and raving at the television,” chuckled Ned.
“Instead, after dinner Dad went in to change for his business meeting and came out wearing a checkered suit and a gaudy tie that someone had given him as a gag gift for his birthday,” interjected Annie. “Mom just kind of looked at him, like OK! By the time that he had gotten to the meeting his behavior was less than tolerable according to his boss. He insisted that an oracle sent by divine providence instructed him to have the company invest in the new tinker toys that were coming out on the market,” stated Annie.
“Could you picture Dad’s oil company investing in tinker toys?!” quipped Ned. “Well, anyway, the boss thought he was a closet alcoholic and needed a lesson in temperance. His co-workers were wanting to see him have the delirium tremens. Dad got mad that they weren’t taking him seriously and stormed out of the meeting, attempted to drive home and ran his car into a thicket. He ended up spending a dismal night on a city park bench and waking up the next morning with an infernal headache,” laughed Ned.
“Hey, let me tell the end of the story,” shouted Annie. “Dad was in a real pensive mood when he arrived home the next morning, wondering why he was wearing this ugly suit and the gag tie. Dad suffered through the boss’s histrionic account of his uncharacteristic behavior when he got to work and was extremely contrite about the whole episode,” ended Annie.
“So, did your Dad ever find out why his behavior was soooo bizarre?” asked a curious Meg.
“That’s between the three of us,” stated Ned slyly.
“Well, not anymore,” shouted Dad storming into the room. |
