Here I was sat with my flask of tea,
Parked on a bench by the canal you see.
The sky was so clear and the Sun so warm,
It’s a good to be alive day, a day to be born.
I often sit here on a day like today,
Thinking of a past love, and why she went away.
I was just sixteen, in love, at that age you are,
But her family moved away to a land so far.
At first we kept in touch mainly by post,
Yet now I receive none, that’s all I can boast,
But when I am here I often think about her
Would we still be together, with love to share.
I am now fifty plus, in an age of reminisce,
Oh, how shy she was with that first little kiss.
The walks along this canal, both hand in hand.
I told her I loved her that really felt grand.
But now I must go, but with a warmth in my heart,
For with these dear memories I could never part.
With all the magic that a young love can give,
It’s just those few precious moments I’d love to relive.
