I thought they would follow me
and they did so,
so closely.

They traced my steps
like my fingers on your face
and on we went,
halfway across the bridge.

They glued my feet to the ground
and surrounded me
without a sound—
I could hear them suffocating
me from the inside out.
I was so out of breath
I could not release
the climaxing shout.

They quietly coaxed me “Let it out,”
—it was a tease:
eternal drain freeze.
Warm me with some blankets,
and thaw me into blankness.
