The Blank White Wall of Dreams

    I was cooking Chinese
When a soft voice said “ Hello ”

    I turned
And she walked into my room
    And into my life
    All honey and amber
    Soft beauty
“ I bought some cold beer ” she said

I didn’t even know her name
    “ That’s very kind of you ”
“ Do you like Chinese food ? Funnily enough I was cooking for two ”

I turned my attention back to the wok
Prawn and sauce, flash fry soy, hint of cayenne
“ Smells wonderful ” she breathed
I heard the twist of bottle beer tops
And next a cool cold line of condensation
    Traced softly on my shoulder

    “ I don’t have much ” I told her
“ Not a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of either ”
I turned with two plates of Chinese food
    “ Chopsticks ?” I asked
    She smiled, waft of summer
Her hair falling burnishes of gold
    Little white cotton top
    Short denim skirt
Did she notice my hands tremble

    Chopsticks it was
And we ate for a while in silence
Cold beer on the backs of out throats
“ This is delicious ” she remarked
I smiled, “ and so are you ”
    She smiled
I looked up and into those soft pools of honey and amber
    And hung there
Between precariously clasped prawn and mouth

“ I love a man who can cook ” she said
    “ Do you ?”
and rhetorically “ and who is he ?”

    She looked at me
And a flow of always has been
Settled itself with a welcome in an old familiar place

    “ Wanna hear a joke ?” I asked
    She nodded
I told her a dirty joke
And she laughed so hard she almost choked on her beer

We laughed a lot that day
We laughed for the rest of our lives

    I woke up
Shifted with the, “oh, but of coarse ”
    And turned onto another shoulder
    Rolled over
And stared into the blank white wall of dreams
