The Last Summer Rain

Far away
so far away
and deceiving
and pleading
mind reading away
Butterscotch romance
expiration dates passed us by
in the summer heat we wept for relief
but our eyes stayed bone dry
Elated congratulations
too belated to count sincere
but we smiled along anyhow
and prayed for a path out of here
Through thunder and lightning
we drove over the law
keeping secrets and silence
within our cheerfully grim craw
We rhymed without reason
we loved without care
and when our hope expired
we realized we never reached our there.
