    dotsSurfaces ( for Amanda )dots

The outer boundary of an artifact or a material layer constituting or resembling such a boundary

The extended two-dimensional outer boundary of a three-dimensional object

A superficial aspect as opposed to the real nature of something

    What do you see
    Comprehended in physical form
    The word
    Of anything made, by definition

Branch, leaf and bark, trunk and twig
    To pass it off
    As simply

    Do you see
The photosynthesis, splitting atoms inside a leaf
    Do you see
    The transpiration pressure they cause
    And chemical reactions
    So complex
    And still further inside
The cells of a trees DNA
    Or the cycles of respiration
    The beauty of its creation

    Or is it just wood
    Immobile sedentary life
    Do you see its light
    And the years of growth
    The perfection of its form
In your momentary glance can you capture
    A Trees overture

    The fickle crowd rides
    In and on insubstantial waves
    And thoughtless pays no heed
    To the grandeur surrounding them

    How do you see
Emotive by the constraints of defining by concepts
Blind to all the other forces and process
    By which these things create

    And its rolling waves
    In crest and trough
    Its artwork of playing light
    The horizons sharp
    On which we float

But do you feel its depth
Do you feel through its water
    The global force
    The single worldwide molecule
    Can you taste its salt
Which and what part of you connects
    To the complex of H2O

    When you perceive the sea
Is just a medium for boats
    A place of fish
    And sandy shores
Or do the currents which pass from Africa
Stir the swell or rage against the harbour
The Grand Banks or The Gulf of Mexico

    Once you breathed in
Once was in, the lungs of a tiger
Blew cold from the sky reach peaks
And baked sandstorm of The Sahara Desert
Frozen in the grip of icebergs
Once the first exhale of a new born child

    Or is it just wind
Something you use to dry your clothes
Just a movement and eddy of the medium
    Through which you flow
    Is it just breath
    Taken for granted
A space into which we can pore
    Our gaseous garbage

    With what do you see
Do you feel the vibrant gestalt
    As a one-ness of being
Do the blades of grass bend
    Under your feet
Do colours assault you with their beauty
Do the pits and scars of pebbles and stones
    Carry an ancient memory

    Or is it just dust
    Something for you
    To have dominion of
Is it all just there as you are
    Riding the surface
    The outer edge
    Of what
    And who
