You took my keys, and we dreamed for the coast
leaving today, but not knowing tomorrow
we got so drunk of the buzz and the lights
that heaven met us on the ground
and the stars fell out of our eyes
we sang and we danced to your rhythm.
my heart, i swore it was the drum.
i heard it in my ears,
& felt the vibrations on my tongue.
but we collapsed and we fell.
& the ocean sung us lullabies,
sand comforted our weary souls
& the warm velvet sky covered our eyes,
concealed our intentions, but not our hearts.
though like a thief in the night,
you were gone by light.
with heavy pockets,
filled with my heart and bottle caps.
leaving your empty love and cigarette packs.
i drove for hours, with maps and a compass
but no sense of direction into your heart
your clothes. your body. my head. your chest
like being behind the glass, & finding no way in.
just rose & a note haunting my glove-box
"you're better off not knowing"
