Description:

I speak to you

Sometimes you wake up
and you're hungry.
Maybe you don't have any wins
(whatever you define that to be)
or maybe you do
but they're tired now
and you crave another.

You want to have better.
To do better.
To be better.

You want to stop smoking
stop drinking
stop swearing
stop squatting down
into bad memories and useless rants
like pools of warm urine.

You walk faster and use a day planner
and your speech changes
from "kinda" and "maybe"
to "yes" and "no."

You get cleaned up
and lose weight-
go to bed
and save money.

You start college or you finish
and get a job in a place that has life.

And you've been okay
with sleeping alone
but now you believe
because your heart is back.
Your heart is fresh.
Your heart is young
once again.

You repent
and the fight sizzles and pops
from your fingers
and the roaring is in your eyes
until you frighten those around you
and the victory is yours.

Just be sure to keep the hunger.

I think this is perhaps the beauty and the curse of us. We always strive to get to better things, and when we get there, we are satisfied for a little while before old or new dreams kindle that spark in our hearts, and then it's on the move again for something better. Sometimes I wish I could be satisfied with what I have and where I am, but chasing dreams is so satisfying. I think the real curse is when we stop wanting more. When we stop chasing dreams. That's when you start to die.

You repent
and the fight sizzles and pops
from your fingers
and the roaring is in your eyes
until you frighten those around you
and the victory is yours.

Just be sure to keep the hunger.

Seeing someone else with that fire in their eyes does scare us. It reminds us that there is still more we can do, and sometimes, like I said before, we want to just be happy with what we have without always wanting to fight for more.

:) this reads a little different from your previous posts, but I still enjoy reading your stuff. It's been too long.

i started out kind of going...mmmm okay not sure about this...then from the "walking faster"
part on..i was reading faster with a real strong rhythm...and really got caught up in the lyrics of this poem and saw my life flash before me, behind me and in front of me...and wondered if i could get that hungry again.
