miss gillian, do you want babies?

    of course i do.

then you need to meet a boy.

well, even if i meet a boy, he would have to have children,
or we would have to adopt. i can't have babies on my own.

    really?

do you remember when i had my surgery?

    yes.

well, they took out where a baby would grow.

    oh.

that's why i borrow you and paige.

    will you borrow us forever?

    yes.

good then. that means we can borrow you
    forever, too.

Thanks for sharing this one. It's the little moments, like the one you've captured here, that serve to carry us through a lifetime of loss, perhaps only of a possibility, but as final as the slamming of a door. You remind us that there's always a window, and love, waiting to be appreciated. Embraced. It's a beautiful reminder.

    All Best,

    M~

So as the reader I assume - perhaps incorrectly - the distinct voices are separated by a large gap in ages. The slanted italics seem youthful and kind, while the normal print seems calm, but hurting.

And you set that juxtaposition up so as to drive the points home; it works exquisitely. Especially because that's how youth is, all full up of unabashed sincerity and sudden kindnesses. This piece reminds me of when I was a kid and I'd say something startlingly sweet and my mom would cry.

You do with simplicity what most miss in all their contrived complexities. Good show.

      Borrow forever. *smiles*
    Such a beautiful! phrase.

Touching (the whole piece) fact or fiction; still touching.
