       A poem for Christmas

    dotsAt Christmasdots

The scent of pine and a chill in the air plagues the senses
While selecting a freshly cut tree at the local lot.
From the mummified majestics stacked against fences
Selecting one is thought to be easy, but it is not.
    A dilemma at Christmas.

Shopping for presents at stores swallowed by the crowd.
Or buying gifts online that are promised to be on time
Arriving late or not at all … cancellation avowed.
And suddenly a sporadic spree surfaces as solution prime.
    A quandary at Christmas.

The tree is too tall, is there a saw at home? Not at all.
Standing upon a chair to break the top of the tree,
Twisting it like wire, trying carefully not to fall.
Maybe you’ll break your neck and then you’d be free
    From this crisis at Christmas.

The gifts are unwrapped and it has grown much too late
To purchase the wrapping paper, ribbons and such.
Presents go naked under the lop-sided tree, that’s fate.
The recipients shouldn’t mind their gifts missing that touch
    Expected at Christmas.

So have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
And do not let such mishaps and fear shame what you revere.
Even if events turn queer you must hold them dear
Despite calamity and misfortune, be of Good Cheer!
    And have yourself the grandest time at Christmas;
    One and All!
