She sits in silence with head bowed low
Cradled by fingers now trembling so
Sobs and tears like mighty rivers
fall from her frame that shakes and quivers
How could she have said such awful things?
Accused him of treachery to her father, the King?
The Knight for whom she wept and sighed,
Carried her colors on his lance held high.
He had bravely fought at her dear father’s side,
And suffered a gash near took his eye!
Who battled and fought till the day was won
And again her flag waved under the sun.
Found guilty Before the King’s court and jailed!
Like a common knave but the Knight prevailed.
Was vindicated and restored to his station,
As the kingdom prepared for a celebration.
How could she have been such a fool?
She loved him, how could she have been so cruel?
To allow her jealousy so evil and vile,
Bring him to death’s door with her hateful black bile.
Could he ever forgive her faithless perfidy?
Could she expect him to treat her mercifully?
She must show him how her love still burns,
For his touch, his kiss her heart still yearns.
She must repent, pay a heavy toll
She would bare herself and bare her soul
It mattered not her saving face,
Only to savor his warm embrace.
And if it is not what’s meant to be
At least there’s penance in humility.
He was stripped of his dignity and his grace.
She’d strip herself the accoutrements of place.
She would go to him not as a princess apart,
But as just a woman following her heart.
The blanket, his gift with his coat of arms
Thrown over her steed , her stallion named Charms
Her saddle followed she tightened the straps
Then onto his back giving the reins a snap
And off she rode with no cloth on her frame
Like a homeless no one, without a name
Through the castle doors so tall and wide
And into the chill of the countryside
Through the wood She rode on brave charms,
To her Knight to his home and to his farm.
The sight she gleaned as she left the woods
Was a sea of loyal subjects around where he stood.
Fellow knights, courtiers and her father the king
Celebrated the return of Knights sacred ring.
Undaunted she approached the joyous crowd
Loudly hailing their knight so proud
There were gasps and murmurs as she rode along
Then a hush like a wave rolled over the throng
They bowed and parted leaving a path
That led to the knight and her father’s wrath.
The only thing to make a sound
Were Charms steady hoofs pounding the ground
Her bosom rose and fell with the pace
but hidden by long lockets of curly red lace
Stunned by their Princess without her crown
Nor her regal attire her golden gowns
At last before her father the king.
“Forgive me father”, her voice did ring
“I have brought dishonor upon your Crown
And for this I will respectfully step down
And leave the kingdom with great haste
For my family’s honor has been debased”
And you my knight, my love and soul-mate
Into your precious hands I deliver my fate”.
The King was silent not uttering a sound
The Knight spoke up while looking around.
“You all know I’ve been in battles so fierce
And many a time my armor was pierced.
But never have I witnessed a deed so brave
By a Knight of high station or neither a knave
As my princesses heart-felt act of contrition.
I reject her self-imposed expatriation.
She is my Princess and will always stay
In my heart - in her service my sword I lay”
With that he leapt upon her horse
She snapped the reins and set a course
Off they rode under leafy covers
Two hearts, two souls, two fated lovers
Some say it is nothing but a romantic story
Most believe it is the kingdoms past glory.
