in cities there are few trees, in a small city even less, thus the tender smell.. and also tender in the sense that cities can be harsh--bustling, concrete, indifferent...as was NY where i came from...yet there was always that smell of New England maples in fall that sifted into the city air. and strongest at night when everything is still... love these short pieces, the almost haiku... jacob
