    Description:
Written for a poetry contest about estrangement due to sexual preference. Hoping that a resonant emotional chord was achieved in this exercise.

    -------------------------------------------

We were friends with much in common
    Even our boyhood dreams matched.
We were both to be men of the world --
    Conquerors and explorers, accomplished.

But you will never know that in our quest
Of sport and art, and everything else --
While you blustered and cheered our team . . .
While we encultured ourselves in museums . . .

I leered at the bronzed athletic limbs,
    conjured steamy trysts with them
and marbled muscular demigods . . . and you.
More's the pity that one drunken night

We had a real moment that neither could recall.
So I returned here, to hiding out in the open.

Anything can happen on drunken nights, when codes break down. It seems as though the friend may also be hiding in the open because he too let the code break. You reach an area many men do not want to look at.

It means a lot to them, as it does to you.
