    -------------------------------------------

    The Nomad

Once upon an October, a nomad now older,
    felt the summer turn colder
On the seventh things were fine, a fairy-tale time,
but the eighth was not so benign
Some ran, some had a plan,
and for the nomad a journey began

For years the nomad wondered, and he wandered
    as he pondered
His fall from grace, into this space,
    this godforsaken place
The wicked and stench, made his stomach wrench,
    and his eyes clench
Then, as if a dream, stumbling through smoke and steam,
    a figure gleams
    Nipping nearer, crippling and clearer,
and the figure now less dearer
A ghastly ghost, this shadowy host,
    whispers a whisper at most
The nomad can’t hear, blinded by fear,
and dares not even a peer
Terrified and deaf, escapes but a breath,
    “this is death”
    The figure amused, almost abused,
at these words the nomad used
In the beast’s lair, at the feet of a slayer,
the nomad sobs what would be his last prayer
Still without charm, yet the figure does no harm,
and reaches wraithlike for his arm
Helps him to his feet, not as if to greet,
just hollow, dark eyes to meet
Almost as if sung, the figure speaks in a tongue,
new to the ears of one so young
“Welcome ‘ye, this place you see,
this place you see is called reality
Where everyone dies, and everyone lies
    Now open your eyes.”

Five to four, not a shadow by the door,
but the nomad sleeps soundly, sleeps soundly no more

I like the rhyme within line theme, it's almost like a dance even if a little offbeat dance is kind of cute. It's always good to have a character development to follow, it allows one to participate after a fashion. Clever stuff.
