    dotsWedding Speech 4/10/2014dots

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls of all ages. May I have your attention please? – Thank you

As the order of speeches go, you can clearly tell that I am no father of the bride. But those of you that know the relationship Daniel and I have you will know that we are no standard couple. So saying that, things are going to be a little different this evening. Plus Shaun wanted a warm-up act so I thought it more fitting that he has three.

The weddings that I have been to have shown me that the grooms speech is more than a mission so we have decided to split the job. That means I will be saying a few words about certain things but I will be leaving some of the toasts for Daniel to perform, so forgive me if you find me ignorant. Trust me we will get to you. I promise. For the duration of the speeches there are going to be numerous toasts so I hope your glasses are full. Remember to not down too much of your drink, that means you too Elisha.

I’d like to start by welcoming you all, both family and friends. However as these events go there are always those who we wish could share our happiness on this special day. To list a few would be a insult to the others, so if i could ask you all to stand and raise your glasses to those who are GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Now we have done that I want to officially express my gratitude for your attendance today. It is truly wonderful that you have all travelled from across the county to share this day with us, especially with us changing the date twice, so I also thank you for your patients. By coming you have individually made this day better than we could ever have expected. I would also like to take a short moment to thank all friends and family who have not been able to make it today but have sent there good wishes to us. So I would like to ask Daniel to stand with me as I dedicate this toast you. OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY

This day not only joins to family trees together, but it is the beginning of a new family tree. You are here to witness the birth of the family name Gilligan-Lomas. A name that is connected to several family roots, that now intertwine.

Speaking of families there are a few people I feel I need to mention, mainly because my mum would kill me if I didn’t. I would like to thank Jane and Paul, for raising Dan. You have made him a head strong individual who has been able to be creative throughout his life and allowed him to turn in to the man he is today. Passionate, caring, and Patient with others. I want to thank you for welcoming me in to your family with open arms and treating like a son from day one of our relationship. I am also grateful to you for entrusting me with your son, I hope to make you as proud as he has

I also want to thank my Mum and Dad, Jayne and James. I probably wasn’t easy to raise as a child or even a teenager. But even when I was acting like Kevin from Harry Enfield and Friends, and even though it was at times “so unfair” I always knew you were there for me if I needed you. I thank you for supporting me through my school days and giving your guidance and strength when I stepped out the front door to start living life on my own. I thank you for supporting me and who I am, even if I came out through facebook. I can always see pride on your faces and I can see it even more so today. I thank you for welcoming Dan in to our family with love and respect; I also thank you for at first thinking he was younger than me even though he has grey hairs on his head.
I would also like to show my appreciation my chosen best people, the first Is Rhiannon, who has been a great friend and very entertaining host last night for a belated stag/hen do with some very good friends, with extended thanks to Holly who has been her aid with the plans and allowing us to use her house, even I don’t know how you managed to get everyone in it. My other best person is a friend from back home, Rachel, who has made the greatest sacrifice I could ask. It is because of her that my mum is able to be here today so could I ask Rhiannon and My sister Roxanne to come forward to receive just a small token of my appreciation. Give them a round of applause please.

So now I get to my groom. People say that things happen for a reason, and since knowing Dan, I too now believe that to be true. This is mainly on the fact that if we would have kept to our second date this would have been a civil partnership but it’s not we can gladly say that this is a marriage and we are husband and husband. And I could not be happier with who I have chosen as the man I want to share the rest of my life with. Now I promised I wouldn’t embarrass him, by mentioning the times I have had to look after him, like the time we had a Eurovision party and he got that drunk he started shouting at our guests in French then collapsed on the bed and it took three hours to get him up. Or the time he went out and I woke up in the morning to find him laid on the bathroom floor still in his expensive overcoat covered in his own vomit. But he has had his fair share of events where he has had to look after me.
The first time I met Dan properly was the 5th January 2011 at 7:15pm at stoke train station, and I have not looked back since. At the time he was with someone else so as a friend I stood by him when he broke that relationship up. A short while later Dan saw me on stage in just my underwear and asked me that night if I wanted to start dating, I wasn’t going to say no. Then Daniel proposed. Picture it, Glastonbury 2011. He took me up to see the best view where you could see every part of the event, got down on one knee and said he couldn’t wait two years to have the opportunity to ask me.

Well what is it that I could say about Dan. I was able to find all sorts, to express my love to him but it wouldn’t be enough. But there is a quote that describes the type of person that he is. William Shakespeare in his play Hamlet wrote “to thine ownself be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man” This is how i see Daniel, he is never afraid to be himself. Something I have respected and admired of him, and something that i have tried to be myself. He is my inspiration. He seems to be afraid of nothing, but knows that i am here for him as he has been for me throughout my life at university and further. He has been an emotional backbone to me in the hard times and has shown me the world through his eyes. Like I said I could go one for an age but it wouldn't seem right to do it at this moment in time. I have the rest of my life. So could I ask you to stand and join me in my final toast, dedicated to my groom. TO DANIEL

And now it gives me great pleasure to ask my best woman Rhiannon to take the mic as she does her speech. Any clarification on the stories she tells the price is a pint and I will reveal all. Thank you.

I see this is your first post in a while- either that or you've erased some things. I don't know, so I'll check that out after commenting.
I skimmed through it; not taking much to heart, since it's all on your personal life. Finding it a narrative text, I tried my best to hear it in my head, figure out if it's catchy- charismatic.

    I think it's...fitting.

I didn't know wedding speeches could be so long, honestly, but this is because I've never actually been to one. In fact, this submission makes me wanna go sometime. Who knows? Maybe one of these days I'll get shit-faced drunk to then crash some stranger's reception...maybe an ex's, better yet.

Thanks for sharing. This piece gives the reader a sense of presence and second-handed affection. Though, of course, only if they're interested. Maybe one day you can turn your wedding speech into a marvelous poem or theatre production.
