Turning under the covers for the umpteenth time,
switching off seemingly impossible.
Keeping eyelids closed a chore,
staring at a wall, the ceiling, the floor.
Poison amber sodium streetlight pervades the gaze
I follow the shape of a silhouette of the window pane with each passing car.
I close my eyes once more.
A show reel of insignificant daily events unravels.
The mind searches an enthralling tangent soon losing interest.
The imagination takes over, that tedious friend.
Finally the mind empties, detachment, letting go.
Kaleidoscopic shapes traverse mindscape freely
random, chaotic, spontaneous, psychedelic, immersive.
Consciousness takes on an assumed guise.
Recognisable faces, expressions, whimsical clichés of speech
A conversation with a stranger in familiar scenario,
passing conversation with a receptionist.
A strange voice calls me in a formal tone,
I am told to accompany unfamiliar colleagues.
I feel needed, enfranchised, an affirmative sense of identity.
Though this is not me, the real me.
This is a surrogate me who stands in when I am dead to the world.
I have successfully reached Dream State.
Asleep at last.
