In Pursuit Of A Better World.
As the world gets more aware of how important it is to thread with caution because of the effects its activities have on the planet, it is important to note that if the beautifully well thought out global development goals that have been set for the year 2030 are to be met; one of the things that need to change is the relationship between business and society.
The current relationship between these two in more ways than one is a master-slave kind of relationship where the minority being the businesses thrives at the expense of the majority being society and this can’t be left to continue. Bearing in mind how much the existence of these two depend on each other, the interactions between them should be rooted in the principle of giving in a receiving way and receiving in a giving way as propounded by Saint Pope John Paul II and not the parasitic kind of relationship we have today which is fuelled by capitalism without conscience.
Businesses should understand that cooperate social responsibility projects are a debt they owe the communities where they operate and that it is not an excuse to create short lived excitement or perform skin deep acts of charity but a means to add value in a sustainable way to the respective communities in question. This morally correct definition of Cooperate social responsibility is what I am completely committed to and would love to see business both big and small imbibe for this will reinvent them from just profit making enterprises to agents of sustainable development as they ought to be. My target is to start relevant conversations that will set this into motion.
Armed with the global development goals, I’m poised to make sure that community leaders, their followers and the owners of the businesses understand that nothing rivals sustainable development so that instead of asking for fish or giving fish as the case may be, learning the art of responsible fishing should be made priority. That way, the community can become economically independent and take charge of their own destiny; a reality that is good for business everywhere. The conversations I plan to start will be considered a success when it when it achieves the following
I Makes businesses look beyond the perception that society is an acquaintance whose aim is to milk them dry.
II Make society look beyond the perception that businesses within their locality are bank accounts they can keep withdrawing from without paying anything into
III make business understand that they must be driven by conscience.
IV Make society understand that it is their job to create an enabling environment for businesses to flourish
V Make both businesses and society understand that nothing offers a more reliable path to success than collaboration.
We can never have a world where business compliments society and everything is better that we can imagine if we do not learn to speak the language of symbiosis. So as I pledge to never stop campaigning to improve the current relationship that exist between business and society, let it be known that the job of changing today’s realities to ensure a better tomorrow is everyone’s duty and as such no hand should left idle in this journey of building a sustainable bridge in pursuit of a better tomorrow.
