    -------------------------------------------

It’s cold. Snow banks mounded high. The charter bus drives off into the distance. The exhaust fumes drifting upwards dissipating in the northerly wind. She looks back before taking a few steps forward then grounds her three duffle bags. The northerly wind is cold and stiff. A road sign rattles back and forth. She pulls her fleece collar closer to her ears while scanning the horizon for any movement. Training has taught her that danger is always near and far.Two years is a long time for the human heart to be at war. A car stops and she looks sideways. The front door slowly opens. A familiar male voice is heard and two dogs jump down and they quickly run pass her. She thinks even their memories are a bit cloudy then it dawns on her in that fleeting moment war has indelibly changed us all.
