    -------------------------------------------

He told me he loved me

and it was a good opportunity:
    a nice boy
    with handsome prospects

I was half a world from home
teeming with wildness, with the sense
    that I could be a brand-new anyone

    could take a lover,
a foreign fling, as they say

but in the rolling heat of Africa
or the driving rains of Washington
    I am myself

    spiky as an urchin

    and could only think
    with great derision

    Oh god,
    spare me.
