    When the river's ebbing low
    Pallid among stones
    You see the reddled wrist
    Of the soft weeds

    Warm under stars
    You lay on your back
    Think of those other times
Like looking through glass in a hall

    On the balcony
    Sunbathing in a changed land
    Waiting for the clouds
    To burst

    By night
    I heard strange thunder
Watched javelins fall into the sea
    And peered over the ledge

I will walk down the road with my yellow notebook
Pass the people who slept through the wind and rain
I'll see the abandoned playground, the silver slide
Gleaming in the sun like a conducter

When I sit in a quiet place
Just let the liffey keep steady on
    All focussed in one direction

When I sit in a quiet place
Having come in only to see
    A familiar face

Then the beer goes early to my head
And I see the poets dead outside
    And beyond, in the places
    A language never reaches

I sit in the quiet place
Till even a girl can't bring me a smile
Until I often wonder aloud to myself
    Have I forsaken my chief?

Willow water in a walled off garden
    What secrets do you show?
    Whose look of contemplation
While roses wilt in the evening?

Where is the walled off garden
When the first deep dream of night
Wilts and leaves you like a child
    Wallowing in the darkness alone?

Wherever I find these rose gardens they help
To while away the dull hours.

    A new strain
    Is stirring the city
    Yellow eyes in the lanes
    Are the first to notice
    And soon the motor stops;
    Down tools, put the ticket
In the book as a chapter ends
    The new harmony is here;
    Heralded vile and vicious
But just see, when it outs
By the strand, hits the nightlights
    It is very agreeable
Has been known to its followers
    Their whole lives.

    The raised place
At the edge of the estate
    Is overgrown

    The sinking weight
    And pendulum of those days
    They won't

    Allow anyone to gather here
My notes written by the bus stop
    In remembrance have stopped

    The city lights peek up
    Going on without you
    In the raised place

When you look down on the path
    A lonely person coming by
    Makes you realise

Far out in a carriage now
the sun spilt over the lawns
and that mild feeling of being
    trapped before miles interceded
    feels like nothing at all
and there's no stopping by the harbour
    and the smell of lobsters
    mackeral and muscles,
the salt in the eye of the haulers
like as if they were slinging sun-beams
    has been swept away.
Far out in a carriage now
    look how last night's rain
made shallow pools in the gardens
you stretch out drinking a can of cider
it's as if you had something on your mind
all day as you look out the window
the green train turns in and it's like your waiting
sleepily, for someone to step out on the veranda.

    The tide took out
What was written in the sand
    Circumfrenced guiltily
By a dot on the beach,
    I felt the breeze go
    This way and that
    Lifting up the silver grains
    And I knew the jewel
Of something I had let pass
    Through my fingers;
When we sat beneath the wall
    Beneath a window-
But oh I scratched it out
    Before anyone could see
    I kicked the sand over
Long before the tide came in
    And took that name away.

    And the sun came down
    From the mountains

    Sun came down around us
    Till we could nearly bathe

    Swallowed my surroundings
The sun and me and us

    And the earliest of us
Standing there on the twirling floor

In the mild light clinging to the bars
    Still standing in our uniformity

    Imagine something scaled down
    Sailing candle-size through the clouds
And the dancing lights of a coastal town
Imagine the whispery sound of the pilots voice
Over the radio saying, "descending now"
    And all the beach scenes in suitcases;
Fireworks as the tram passed along the old road
That first image of everyone in water
The glass building vibrating, and the pepsi train
So happy it wasn't all just a dream
Of Blackpool, and that sick girl in the chair
Thinking you were the son she will never have
    Imagine it all descending down,
And flickering out int the sea
