    dotsThe america that I rememberdots
    -------------------------------------------

The america that I remember welcomed me when I was sick and poor and down-trodden
She said she was sorry to hear I had been down on my luck, but that I was safe here

The america that I remember promised that if I study hard and work hard, I could achieve the “american dream”
She promised a house with a yard,
A white picket fence and lush green grass
A golden retriever and maybe even a red corvette
    (if I got a promotion)

She promised a job and a family and eventually
a nice retirement (maybe in Long Island or Palm Springs)

The america that I remember promised a government that listened and a president that cared
She promised he would not thrust us into wars we didn’t need to be in and
she promised he would not round us up and kick us out after building a life and community for 15 years

She promised to take care of us if we needed it through her welfare programs
and promised to give us the world if we earned it through federal college loans
    She promised opportunity and equality

But the america that I remember hasn’t been around much
    She’s taken ill lately.
And the medication she needs is still under patent by Astrazeneca
who keep increasing and increasing and increasing the price
(Unitedhealth Group rejected her claim 12 times)

The hand of the market that she carefully crafted is solely taking instead of giving
and the branches she planted are being poisoned by lead in the water that nourishes them

The america that I remember isn’t here right now
But there is still hope that she’ll return.
