Yes, you wait for me, on the other end of the tightrope.

I take my first step towards you, with my first word.

It's a long way across, and a deep fall on either side.

Shall I take a step back, shall I look down, or should I look across the gulf to you.

You are waiting patiently, I take a deep breath, and take the next step.

Now not one step but two, I am doing a two-step, across the tight rope to you.

First one word, then the next, step follows step, as I sway towards you.

"Don't fall, don't fall, keep looking at me", you cry out.

I don't know if I can make it all the way. If I fall, I can hang onto the tightrope.

It is scary up here, all I need to do is to take the next step with the next word.

I can't think, I can't think of the next word, I am frozen halfway across to you.

"Will you reach out towards me?", I plead.

You smile, a tight smile, you reach out your hand and open your fingers towards me.

I take this as a sign, I can feel my frozen leg coming to life.

It jerks and I sway, and I move forward one word at a time.

That's all need, one word at a time, so far so good.

You are so close, I can almost smell you.

Oh, oh, the words tumble out, one more step.

One more step and I fall into your arms.

Half terrified, hot and sweaty, I can't believe I made it to you.

The line is linear and sequential, it has beginning, a middle and an end, it goes somewhere, it is teleological.

Our line tells our story, and unbeknownst, we become the story. We follow the line, we become the line.

Our line stretches all the way back to the Phoenicians, but the line is coming to an end. The phonetic alphabet of the Phoenicians is coming to an end, slowly killed by the electric telegraph in 1840, by rock n roll in the 50's, and the net today.

As our literate line is replaced by the electronic image, we become nostalgic and even romantic, and as the line become obsolete, the line rises in status.

And unlike Johnny Cash we no longer walk the line. There are no lines in the global village, only shared emotions, happening all at once.
