Description:

A Sigh of Relief

Tip-toeing on eggshells last night
I could feel them crunching
Beneath my toes
Sharp edges cutting
Good thing I had my socks on
To wipe up the trail of blood

Waiting for the other shoe to drop
I sneak past it carefully
Not making a sound
Not moving too fast
So that it wouldn't knock me in the head
As I go by

Holding my breath again
Letting it out slowly
In even and silent release
My eyes very tired
From watching for signs
DANGER AHEAD

Then little by little
The tension eases a bit
And I don't censor my smile or my words
Quite as much
And when we go to sleep
I breathe a sigh of relief
