Tip-toeing on eggshells last night I could feel them crunching Beneath my toes Sharp edges cutting Good thing I had my socks on To wipe up the trail of blood Waiting for the other shoe to drop I sneak past it carefully Not making a sound Not moving too fast So that it wouldn't knock me in the head As I go by Holding my breath again Letting it out slowly In even and silent release My eyes very tired From watching for signs DANGER AHEAD Then little by little The tension eases a bit And I don't censor my smile or my words Quite as much And when we go to sleep I breathe a sigh of relief |
