ere there comes the best words i have read in this month:
"It is best to remember the important things are not always seen. What makes us most real is our ability to feel."
yeah ...i love i t.. and .. well. i agree with you and with what you wanted to say ... i think you did a good job here and .. i love it .. it will be one of my favorites and and i will stalk you ... take care and peace and love!
I really enjoyed reading this... because I think a lot of these things daily. I liked this because it makes you think, "What is important to me, and why?" And a lot of people are caught up in the things that don't really matter. I am in the process of writing something similar to this piece... so it's cool to see that there are other people who write about such topics.
"Do we really care so much what someone else wears? The animals in the zoo are all wearing fur! Are they impressed?"..you have hit where it hurts the most. Short and Simple poem, we ask such questions day in and day out but with answers we probably do not want to face. Liked this piece with it's easy flow.
there is definitely so much that is more important than material things. it is true that what is more important is the primal and the spiritual.
that said, it is the fullest mane or the brighest plume or the largest rack (of antlers) that wins the mate and propogates the species - even in animals...
The honesty of this one cuts deep. The society that humans dwell in is so superficial and materialistic that it hardly makes sense to me. I wish more people would realize that the things we feel make us who we are, not what we wear (or dont wear) The rhyme scheme of this once kinda seemed like a slow, rap song...maybe almost like slam poetry. But this was really nice, good write.
"It is best to remember the important things are not always seen. What makes us most real is our ability to feel."
I totally agree with you. Materialistic objects shouldn't be valued over a persons personality. It's sad that more people can't realize this simple fact. Good job with this. -blt
"Being Real" is a great title I think, it's about getting back to the essence of human existence during our short stay in this realm. We value material things, appearances both personal/physical and social/status and in doing so lose that connection with what is really important, what will serve us well no matter what social circumstances fall upon us. After living "away' from most of this claptrap for so long, I find i admire more and more, the lives of the wild animals of the forest. As you say, they consider fur a status symbol, -they just quietly get on with their lives, and far from being just "dumb" animals,I think they speak volumes spiritually; we humans have that same soul, and so much more,-why can't we be as serene and focused on life and love without all the gew-gaws. I liked this a lot Angela,-no specific suggestions to improve it, -it evokes a response and causes us to think, and that's all well and good. I think it's an especailly appropriate posting at Christmas/Yule, the ultimate celebration of life and love-which today has gotten very twisted by greed, materialism and those oh-so-important appearances. "Our ability to feel", by this you mean our human emotions, not our sense of touch, for the animals possess that, and it's our feelings that separate us from them. The really big questions are asked here, why are we so materialistic, what is true beauty? Ideally, we all know the answers, and live accordingly...Wrong! We enjoy the creature comforts of this world, and wealth, success, and vanity are our means of keeping score amongst our peers. As the old expression goes, "Money can't buy happiness... but it allows you to buy a car, so you can drive around looking for it." I think you have a great outlook on life, on what is real and of value. If you can keep these ideals for a lifetime, you will be a truly happy person. I loved your poem and I agree with you about feelings, they are the only thing that matters, except for a sense of humor.
What irony, a nation of millions wanting to be their own bad as.s individual selves, and each one wants to wear the same clothes, drive the same car, watch the same movies, or else people won't think they're cool. I think I'd just as soon be the odd one out, the loser. Hows that go again? "To thine own self be true" Better whisper that heresy. I liked your write. Hope you feel better and that classes are going OK Dave
I remember this piece and how much I loved it. I still do! Very true words spoken here (as usual). Its kind of funny that some people could spend so long trying to get money to buy a fancy car, but in an accident it could just be totally totaled. And for what? To look cool for others? To compensate for some other area in their lives that are lacking. I'm weak and insecure so I'm gonna be me a tough SUV? Forget that noise. Society is so materialistic its just pathetic.
*adjusts his new hat* Did I mention I didn't even have to pay for it? ~Aaron P.S. Miss you
hello there, i have to say that this piece is a little cheesy in my opinion. it is your right to comment on what you will, and i am fine with that, and like you said, you feel like it.
so why not.
however the rhymes are a little contrived and you have not really commented on the subject in a way that has not been done a squillion times. its like the whole bush-blair politics bandwagon that everyone is jumping on to oppose.
we know.
i agree with your message angela. and it is the things that we should be looking for that we are not and vice versa. i enjoyed your little reference to the animals and their fur, and the relevace of animals as an analogy to how we could be living. i also think you could have slightly extended your piece. although your ending fits with what you are doing, it seems very abrupt. i am kind of waiting for the commentary on values and morals and empathy and kindness and spirituality and and and,,, but that is that. take care www.on1eday.co.uk
i am so excited that you posted this newbie! how true, how true this is. people are so damn concerned with how they look, what they wear, what kind of car they drive... the totally miss what is really important in life. it's like the human race is devolving instead of evolving. yeah, the ability to feel, which is sometimes painful but always an adventure and a way to grow and change. love, the most beautiful feeling of all, is lost in the lust and decadence of our age. disturbs me that so many young people throw away sex like it's just a piece of trash... i'll get off my soapbox now! lovely write, angela~, and so needed for people to hear! brava for you!
I agree that we spend too much time worry about material possessions. We worry what others have and scheme to get things for ourselves to impress others. Well, I agree that your rhymes aren't the newest in the world, but it's hard to find new rhymes, you know. Actually searching for "new" rhymes leads to atrocious rhymes like awful/jaw full and blue inside/suicide. I'm glad that you're posting again.
It's so very true, we grow up learning to go school work hard make as much money as possible so we can buy houses and cars. We should be teaching how to Embrace the moment and the people who are sharing it with us. This piece is in ways similar to the piece I wrote " the Irrelevance of time". We need to tell those we care about we love them, regardless of what gifts they bought us or vice versa.More people need to understand this-JOhn
The biggest problem with rhyme is that the choices are restricted and no matter what we choose, it can almost always end up sounding forced. I din't think was that forced; the worst types of rhyme are the ones where you can second guess what's going to be said before you even get to the next line. But you're right. Why do we care so much about the material aspects of our lives? And others', too? I wish I knew... I like my comforts in life but they don't make it, nor will they break it. I liked the line about the animals wearing fur... that was something tongue in cheek and just gave me this vision of a posh [censored] in a leopardskin coat walking past a cage at the zoo and being sniffed at by all the other big cats :D But you're right in that you hit on what it is about humans that makes us special; the ability to feel. And to express that feeling. An animal with food and a warm place to sleep would consider itself rich, if such a thing were possible, so for all the money and big houses we may have, they are merely trappings and means nothing more than the fat belly and picked bones of a creature's dinner, when it all boils down. What makes us special... is we can thank the cook. Good to see ya posting again :)
