The setting is in a lunchroom. To get this point across, have the actors pantomime eating and drinking.
Props: book bags, a bible, and at least two tables, two of them with four chairs. Christie should be wearing a watch.
Jenny:
Kyle, that party Friday night was so cool!
Kyle:
Yeah, it was, wasn't it?
Ralph:
The way you pranked those freshmen was awesome!
Kyle:
Freshmen are such losers.
Jenny:
(Making an expression of disgust)
Oh, no, here comes one of them now. What's that girl’s name?
Ralph:
Who knows?
Kyle:
Who cares? (Ralph and Kyle laugh as Christie approaches, smiling)
Christie:
Hey, Jenny! Hey Ralph, hey Kyle.
Jenny:
Um . . . hi . . . what's your name, again?
Christie:
(Faltering a little, but still smiling)
Um . . . it's Christie.
Jenny:
Oh, right. Yeah, well, hi.
Christie:
I was just wondering if I could sit with you guys.
Ralph:
(Snickering with Kyle)
Don't you have any loser freshman to hang out with?
Jenny:
Yeah? I mean, can't you see that we're (takes book bag and places it on the seat next to her) full?
Christie:
Oh . . . of course . . . sorry! (Turns and walks away quickly to an empty table and sits down)
Elise:
(Entering into the room, sees Christie by herself at a table and comes over)
Hey, Christie! What's up? Mind if I sit with you?
Christie:
(Not looking up)
Hey, Elise. Wouldn't you rather go sit with all your junior friends instead of a freshman loser like me?
Elise:
(Sitting down)
What are you talking about?
Christie:
I just asked Jenny and her friends if I could sit with them - and she totally blew me off! Gosh, she's only a year older than me! She was a freshman, too!
Elise:
(Opening her book bag and taking out a bible)
You know the Bible talks about this.
Christie:
(Looking up, interested)
Really? What does it say?
Elise:
(Opening her Bible to marked verse)
Well, it says in 1 Samuel 12:22 that, "The Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you His own." Basically, although some people may act like total jerks and ignore you, it's okay, because the Lord never ignores His own.
Christie:
Oh . . . anything else? I think it's going to take more than one verse to make me feel better.
Elise:
I understand. There’s probably something in the New Testament. Here, let me look. (Pauses and flips through a little) Um, in Mark chapter 8, Jesus is talking to his disciples. Verse 31 says that, "He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and teacher of the law."
Christie:
Didn't even his homeland reject him? I think I heard Pastor Jay talk about that a few Sundays ago.
Elise:
Right! I mean, these people were rejecting their Savior, the guy they had been waiting for! Jesus went through all sorts of rejection, but he always loved and forgave his persecutors.
Christie:
Kinda makes me feel like my problem was sort of . . . well, insignificant.
Elise:
Yeah, I know the feeling! But Jesus still loves us, in spite of all our problems and worries.
Christie:
(Smiling)
Hey, I'm starting to feel better already! I guess I can't stay mad at Jenny and all them. It wouldn't be right, not after what Jesus went through for me - and for them!
Elise:
Well, that's good. But maybe you should go - don't you have class in a few minutes?
Christie:
(Checking her watch)
Oh, my gosh! You're right! I better hurry! (Gets up and leaves)
Elise:
(Laughing a little)
Bye! (Resumes reading her Bible) |
