I woke up today
to find the pines covered in frost,
the frozen blades of grass
glimmering a blue
under the dark morning clouds.
I rolled over
to discover you weren’t there.
Recalling the way you held me
last night,
all night,
I nestled deeper under the blanket,
wanting to turn the cotton into your arms,
wanting to bring back
you and your sturdy chest,
the best pillow I’ve had in ages.
A rose hangs from my ceiling.
Your wallet lays on the coffee table,
and my socks are wadded up
on the carpet,
right where we left them last night.
Our feet kept each other warm.
I woke up today
to find the pines covered in frost,
a blanket of snow
gleaming azure and silvery
under the dark morning clouds.
I rolled over
to discover your heart,
still warm in the protection of my loving arms.
