African Warrior, Gentle and strong. It won’t be long. The present won’t last. Look to the past To see the leaders and the kings Look for the one who sings The one to whom Alex Haley Went to see. The women who let the slaves go free. You know Tubman, but do you know Shad, Mary Ann was the one who had, A law degree, after being free. Do you see the philosophy? Free your mind from your own pain. Listen to me as I explain. Don’t let their trials be in vain, They broke free form slaverys chain. You come from warriors, you come from kings. You can soar so high from your legacy’s wings. Shaka Zulu, Selassie high, Fertile forests and lands so dry. Claude Mckay, Langston Hughs Ella and the lady that sings the blues. See line woman, See her rise, Madam Walker and her hair surprise. Rosa Parks and Doctor King. Marvin Gaye, can you hear him sing? Brother, brother brother, Still Far too many of you dying. WE need more of you out there trying, To continue the dream. To be a team. March more than a million deep. Let those that doubt you scream and weep. Live in fear, that the day is near For a colorfull nation. |
I'm w/poeticblindness here. I prefer this one. I feel like it makes a bigger statement, and more smoothly. However I really like this part from the other version: "Unbeatable. Unreachable. Unshakable. Untouchable. Undeniable. With a future as strong as the past." and I think it would rock if you found a way to fit it into this version. Powerful statement. I really enjoyed this.
