I could smell the mint of her gum from across the room. Not like there was all that much along the lines of obstructions in the room; it was only her and me. Our glances met as she turned to look at the clock, and I bowed my head quickly in embarrassment. She was pretty, why shouldn’t I look at her? But instead I glared at my lap and pictured her. Her skin was as clean and soft as a newborn babe, her thin but smooth features added to her graceful movements, and she had the most gorgeous eyes I’d ever seen. I could see in her eyes that her innocent and virgin exterior sheltered a rebel. I saw myself. I saw us. And in that moment I knew we were meant to be together. But as soon as that exhilarating moment flowed through me, it shot out as my hope shattered. Just because I wanted her most definitely did not mean she wanted me. I mean, how could I even know if she would go for someone like me. I’m a unique sort of mate…but I couldn’t help but shake the confidence I had that we were destined for each other. Just as I started to work up the nerve to just lift my head again, the bell rang. I heard the swish as her knapsack got pulled off the desk and then she walked towards the door. As I waited for her to pass, I heard her stop behind me. I straightened up slowly in my chair, and she placed her hand on my shoulder. I turned my head slowly and she smiled at me. I stood and she slid her hand into mine. We walked through the halls and, despite the stares, I was happier than I’d ever been. |
