I dreamed of Shadow's waking;
like a vision of an undead shade
stirring from ancient slumber.
A countenance as dark as Satan's heart.
I asked him who he was; he answered,
"I am the lord of false truth,
ruler of unreality."
Unreality; I said.
"Yes; you base reality upon principles,
principles to which I do not conform."
"I posess mass but no substance,
density without weight,
I can be felt but not touched;
therefore I cannot be real but unreal."
For the first time I noticed
that the distant lights
weren't lights at all;
they were stars.
Where are we I asked?
"You are with me"
the now familiar voice replied from all directions.
But where are you?
"I am everywhere;
my vastness engulfs the heavens."
But how can that be?
Shadows are but reflections of something else.
"But I was the first."
"The reflected image of the vast emptiness
that existed before creation."
But shadows can't exist in space I cried.
"Oh' really; does light exist in darkness?"
I pondered this for a moment
then conceded the point
for I could not argue against it.
"How much you humans refuse to see"
the shadow lord said with an air of disappointment.
"Reality is so much larger than what you know."
"I am the very essence or spirit of shadow,
but just one of the many spirits in creation."
"Long ago there was a people known as druids;
these people learned to speak with us
and in doing so found a deeper respect for all things."
"They began to hear water's song in the rains,
see the fire child's dance of life
as it flickered on a candle,
and feel wind's spirit of freedom in the breeze."
"Now we are forgotton but by a few."
I listened as the shadow spoke;
I couldn't help feeling very small
and wondering how so many things
could escape our attention.
Then he said "it's time for you to go,
you must wake now."
I heard a distant ringing
like a bell through fog,
but waking...realized it was only my alarm. |
