In most parts of the world,
    Women are property.
    They're sexually mutilated
    In the name of tradition.
    School stops for most
    When they can give birth.
    Usually at 13.
    For some, school isn't even
    considered an option.
    An American Woman
    Is free to be
    Whatever she wants.
    There are no limitations
    On career or education.
    Or she can stay home
    and raise a family.
    An American Woman
    Will never know
    Legal mutilation
    Or a sentance of death
    Because she MIGHT
    Have had an affair.
    An American Woman
    Dresses as she chooses
    Speaks as she chooses
    Loves who she chooses.
    So the next time
    You want to complain,
Think about the rest of the world
    And what it really means
    To live and be
    An American Woman.

Oh, I completely agree. Have you read 'Shabanu'? Or seen 'Osama'? You did what those people did without the harshness; you put it into poetry, so it flowed without force-feeding guilt. Although the sufferage movement took time, it happened, and we are fortunate to live in a place where we are able to make it happen. (of course, this administration is trying to cut back on that, but I won't dwell on the pessimistic...) Nice write!!

      That's a very powerful statement!!

It really pulls together and documents how disgracefully women have always been treated and still are in most parts of the world.

It's beautiful how you appreciate the freedom that you as a woman posses, just as we all need to appreciate that freedom!!

    Beautiful write!!

I tried being a woman once...but they arrested me for loitering in a hotel bathroom...damn them!

Seriously, I liked the message here and growing up with 2 sisters and such, I respect women. The message here should be taken abroad, but many cultures have their strict rules about women that are soooo outdated. But hey, I hear they are starting to let women become suicide bombers in that culture, so maybe thats a step in the right (wrong) direction, ya know?
    Anyway...solid write Traci!

Whoopee! You go girl! Tell it like it is!
All jokes aside, there is so much truth in these words of wisdom. How can we as women complain about having it so hard when we are the luckiest, most freedom of women in the world?? If you go into a debate, my vote is with you dear...

    Smiles,
    Linda

Great Write Traci! The freedoms we have here, and all the possibilities, are so much better than women have in other countries.
Wonderful of you to write this. I so often wonder why one human is regarded higher than another (as in Men and Women). But at least here in the good ol' USA we do have much more room to breathe, an be.. than in other areas of the world. For that, we should all be grateful.
    An enjoyable read!

      Amen sista!

I'm glad someone has pointed this stuff out, cause there are a lot of women that I've run into that seem to forget how many women are viewed these days and how they are treated. We have freedoms that too many aren't even allowed to dream of grasping. I'm proud to be an American Woman! You did a nice job with this one- it's kinda in your face. Nice reality check for some.

You are so correct on this.

American women have it made compared to other counties.
Like you stated in a previous journal (which I think the idea for this came from) women in Africa are left alone in a room to give birth.
They are rapped and beaten and sometimes killed.

I don't understand why women seem to play second fiddle I guess it's a culture thing.
    [censored] that I say.

Wonderful Piece! I so agree we have it better here than other places. We can do what we want, when we want, and how we want. We joke about everything because we have the right to use our voices. We can vote. We can verbally disagree with our spouses and not be punished by law. I wish it could be that way everywhere. That would be awesome!

    Love ya!
    Chell

P.S. should it be "dresses as she chooses"?

Wow! I completely agree...people think women, along with christians are so persecuted, when in reality they have not even a glimpse of what it is. We are completely blessed to be in a world where we can express ourselves freely and to put it in a flow of words such as poetry like you just did is amazing.
