    -------------------------------------------

Sheets of rain drove down like nails from the sky as two silhouetted figures appeared in the doorway. A gust of wind announced their arrival as they stepped into the cozy yellow lit lobby of the pub.

The low roar of the patrons in the establishment ceased long enough to see who had darkened the door stoop.

Two figures wandered into the lobby closing the door being them. One stepped forward while the other one held back for a couple of steps then followed suit.

The first one, dressed in red and black mid length tunic, black pants and tan leather riding gloves and a pair of velvet sued black boots stepped into the cozy lit den of Tabbies.

Her companion dressed in black laced shoes, white stockings, a plaid miniskirt and a dark blue sweater complete with a see through electric parka closed in behind her lead.

Briefly the two shook off the large drops of rain from their bodies and paused momentarily realizing that each had instinctively done the same action. Their linked biological quirks would occasionally surface like this when they allowed their minds to wander.

This allowed them sometime to adjust to the brighter light. Once in focus then began to look around. Tabbies was the kind of place reticent of a bygone era. This fact was evident in the cozy family like environment that it offered.

Like most 20th century designs of the time Tabbies had intricate decorations and carvings etched into its oak walls and trim. Complete with raised black oak wood paneling, Suspended trim brass and glass lanterns and a suspended wood ceiling. The bar was easily the oldest bar in the district and perhaps the region.

The once inviting atmosphere of the family owned British commissary had began a slow down spiral from being a once proud beacon to the community to a remising ghost of its former self. Now a vice den seething with every kind of riffraff imaginable this bar would have been a perfect place of a gal of Quol’s status.

It was also the perfect place for the two pink haired girls to begin their search for clues and information on what Quol was doing at the time up to her death.

Haruko looked ahead over the sea of heads and the wait staff that would crest above the sea of shady individuals with hands held high, equipped with saucers and trays filled with draft mugs or food if they happened to come up the steps to the upper level where the two girls were standing.

Mamimi deactivated her electric parka and loosened her clothing a little now that she was warm. Unlike Haruko who was searching for a specific point of interest. She began to lazily glance at the upper grotto and beyond the hand cared wooden banister and down into the actual bar where the table hosted a wide variety of potential predators. In the background a single clean shaven man behind the counter with a black apron on and a white button up shirt moved back and forth in front of a large ornate wooden hutch, housing a wide variety of spirits behind its large wood and glass doors.

Mamimi stared googol eyed at the flags on either side of the cabinet. From this distance the bar with its wood carvings and brass rails and stool steps looked more like an 18th century British schooner than a bar.

Haruko saw her mark, the owner/bar keep that ran to and fro along the bar. Pressing forward toward her mark she allowed her police instincts to take over. Quickly she adjusted her blaster to a more suitable place to draw it if needed, her eyes shifting from potential suspect to suspect the moment she entered the upper den.

Making her way past the balcony banisters and down the steps she hovered her hand close to her blaster.

The lanky girl and her twin pressed through the maze of predatory eyes that sized them up as they passed by destined to meet the Tabbies only existing owner.

Haruko could feel the eyes on her, some possibly undressing her. This made her tenser and her voice quivered as unpleasant thoughts came to mind.

Mamimi felt the sensation and had been mentally dazed pushing it off at first. But the smell of that little piece of heaven she had long since forgotten about. Had reminded her that she could really go for one now, a death stick would have done nicely about now.
The mere thought of this alone put her on edge as she pushed her sister through the crowd.

Three minutes later Haruko exhaled and relaxed a little as she rested her elbows on the bar. Craning her neck past the isle of patrons and mugs that sat on the counter she flagged down the bald man between his rounds.

“What’ll it be, lil ladies.” he said in a hearty Cockney voice.

“A sex on the beach for me, and peppermint schnapps for her.” Haruko said tugging her head over in the direction of Mamimi who only now began to make her mind focus.

The bartender disappeared only for a moment, turning to face the tap. With a flurry of arms warring above and to the side of his head the Barkeep produced the requested spirits and turned to the two girls.

Mamimi now able to reach the bar stand. Eagerly waited for her drink, something that would help ease their tensions about the environment and her cravings. Cradling her drink and just about ready to welcome the eagerly awaited vice. She lifted the glass and drew it closer to her lips and just as she was about to take a sip. Her com went off; startling her and making her nearly drop the glass clumsily placing the glass back on the counter before she made a mess. Mamimi jumped form the stool, ~I’ll take It.~ she announced to her sister through thought projection.

“Is there anything else I can help you with? Me lu’lies” The man added.

“Yes actually there is,” Haruko smiled leading up to her conversation on the where abouts of their Ferengi crewmember.

~Ok, just keep where I can see you.~ Haruko implicated in return, hinting to her that she need to stay where she could have a clear line of shot just in case something were to go wrong.

Mamimi nodded and weaved through the lower den of seething pit vipers to an audio dead zone. Then she activated the comm. ‘Hey sis got any news?’

    ‘Indeed.’

‘So what did ya find out?’

‘The news is grave; it appears that there are several forces involved in this last venture of Quol’s. My findings indicate that an old earth society called the Laminate has issued a challenge. It is willing to establish an alliance with any organization that finds the Abernathy Carfax. The Worshipful Master issued a transmission early last month stating anyone that first decodes the devise, successfully will be granted full access to the Luminatie's, political , social and deep financial alliances.”

“Oh wow, a cult?” Mamimi interpreted with zeal.

‘Yes. I’ve checked all incoming and out going transmissions and have discovered that this transmission has increased the amount of inner earth traffic immensely. Every political and social dissonant had come from the lowest dregs of society to partake in this hunt.’

‘So what about the Abernathy Car fax?’ Mamimi took a curious stab.

‘The Abernathy Carfax is an alien artifact that predates several galactic empires possibly more. Because of its obscurity no one really knows what it looks like. The only way to trace it is to scan it. This device will automatically wipe out any source signature that comes in contact with it. It’s quite unstoppable.’

‘Ohhh.’ Mamimi at a loss for words managed to say.

‘The Abernathy Carfax is about the size of a milk carton. It’s rumored to be a rock or a crystal.’

    ‘A thunder egg?’
‘Possibly, this much is known Quol has located its where abouts. It’s quite unfortunate that someone else got to her before we did. With a device like this available no one is safe. It will wipe out any linking computer infrastructure and anything tied to it and there is nothing that can prevent that.’

“Oooooo, now I get it.’ Mamimi’s mouth formed a perfect ‘O’.

‘So an auxiliary lead is of the utmost importance. With out it we are in great peril if we encounter it. The simple action of a scan could spell our demise.’

‘Well you can count on us sis. We won’t let you down.’ Mamimi reassured her. ‘Neither federation, Klingon or gangster will prevent us from obtaining our goal.’

‘Rubic’s transmission has been located in the southern hemisphere. Apparently he has also decided to claim this prize for himself.’

Human nature 101, it would have been a nice if it was a course that was offered. Unfortunately, most space patrol cadets had to learn early to trust their instincts. Haruko was no exception.

She had the feeling after asking the Owner about the Ferengi. She had gathered that he was to a lot less info than he already knew. She could see the fear in his eyes and that was enough for her.

“Say tell ya what, Come here after we close up. I’ll have some info for ya...” He said pulling real close to her. “We close in 3 hrs.”

Haruko just nodded. Finishing her drink she waited while Mamimi returned to the bar stool before relaxing her free arm that was near her blaster.

Rei Ayanami’s final words still fresh in her mind. ‘I am having some trouble maintaining contact with my source host. I can help where I can.’ Returning to the bar stool Mamimi grabbed her glass and downed the peppermint schnapps before she got any more interruptions. A few seconds later the alcoholic effects took a firm grip and she shuttered a little.

“So what did you find out?” Haruko swiveled the stool around facing her with inquisitive eyes.

In a glance Mamimi had explained it all to Haruko. ~So that’s it.~ she thought reclining in back on the stool. Thining for a moment she slid down off the stool.

~First off we need to regroup. Let’s get out of here I’ll explain what I have in mind.~

Mamimi nodded and followed her out the door.
