Description: I'm about to go into a period of rhyming forms, and I am the first to recognize that they are not my strong suit. So, I'm doing little exercises here and there. This happens to be the first...
Ballad is next. Beverly HIllbillies and Gilligan's Island. Hah! I'll get into that laster...
If you have questions about who the title is, google Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and his story, "A Day in the Life Of..." It's a good one;)
Ivan Denisovich Shukov Was -------------------------------------------
Well, I read One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. I guess it does a good job at telling his story, but it just leaves out so much of the misery of gulag life. I like the addition of the last stanza though to put it into historical context. However, you don't even put the story into its contemporary sociopolitical perspective. One Day... was published in a period known as The Thaw in which, under Kruschev, there was a re-evaluation of Stalin's legacy. I suppose it needs to be said that Ivan isn't an actual person, but a fictionalized gulag inmate. I also have to add that One Day... seems mild to me compared to Solzhenitsyn's other works (The First Circle, for instance). I'm a bit a Soviet history buff, and I've read and watched a lot of films about the gulags, and it seems so mild. I have a poem called Saving Daffodils about a gulag inmate if you are intersted. I suppose this is fine as an exercise in rhyme, but it doesn't explicate enough for my taste, Amy
I'm with Graeme on this one. But I plan to look up this Ivan, ASAP. You did a well job in your flow, but the lack of info, kinda threw me off. All in all, you did a fine job...but are you really surprised? lol.
I did a quick search, which helps a little in understanding who Ivan was. I think you've done well with your extremely abridged history here. You definately make me interested in knowing who the subject is. Very Nice Work, Nicely.
When I read the description I wasn't prepared for this form of rhymming because the lines are so short and structured. As for not being good at it you did a fine job, of imparting as much into the lines as possible in such a short write. jan
