Description: For English, my teacher asked the class to write a poem in the style of the American Romanticists. We had to choose one object in nature and elaborate on it as well as tie it in with a transcendentalist philosophy. We also have to have a visual to go along with it, so I took a really cool picture of the sky from when I was in San Diego. If you look closely there is a giant sunbeam coming down from the clouds shining directly on the ship below. Here's my attempt at Romanticism.
A Saucerful of Secrets -------------------------------------------
What higher power than the firmament
Embracing all who dwell upon Earth?
Intangible body vast and permanent
Presiding over all death and birth
Airy matrix fiery with the sunrise
Morphs as it ages to a calming blue
There’s wisdom in this superior devise
Lessons taught by the inspiring view
Fleeting moments embedded in the mind
Are nimbus clouds upon the lofty sky
Enigmas whisking above the countryside
Is this to where souls depart when bodies die?
The heavens are filled with this ectoplasm
Floating about like those in a dream
Opening up to an endless blue chasm
Spilling forth the light of great sunbeams
Serving Earth a caring deliverance
Bringing cool rain to places in need
The sky bursts forth with kind obeisance
Watery nourishment for plants to seed
Life forms sustained in this open blue space
Each breath taken is a gift from the air
Elixir contained in an invisible case
A generosity exceedingly rare
The sky invites with its omnipresence
To share its secrets under the sun
Filling hearts with wonder and pleasance
A trillion souls under a dome of one
Romatic poetry is amongst my favourite literary styles. Somehow, it seems more elaborate, rich and deep than what you get in modern poetry. Your poem was very good (maybe I am just biased) and I truly enjoyed this. The structure is a bit flawed: there is no coherence between some of the lines, which makes it seem as though you forced some words to maintain a specific rhythm. But apart from that, your diction is great. It is so rich, and elaborate as I said earlier. And the imagery is quite original. The end does not seem to convince me though. It is a bit hyperbolic when the rest of the poem is not, but nonetheless I really liked this one. These are just thoughts and recommendations, and I hope you find them useful.
