A Birthday Analysis

Author: Poetry of Christina Georgina Rossetti Type: Poetry Views: 1486

My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a water'd shoot;
My heart is like an apple-tree
Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these
Because my love is come to me.

Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.

The poem could also be seen as Rossetti writing about religion, and 'A Birthday' could generally mean reborn and where she talks about her love, it could mean for a God or some other holy feature of her religion.

The idea of Rossetti wanting to share her feelings is conveyed through the singing bird. She is, in effect, singing like the bird, when she is writing the poem, telling everyone about her love.

christina rossetti in this poem is speaking about love. she's happy because her love has now come to her though it sounds a bit ironic since she never was actually married though she talked of love.there is also a high use of comparison to create a vivid picture to the reader of the poem.! by ruth yongolo
