An Enigma Analysis

"Half an idea in the profoundest sonnet.
Through all the flimsy things we see at once
As easily as through a Naples bonnet-
Trash of all trash!- how can a lady don it?
Yet heavier far than your Petrarchan stuff-
Owl-downy nonsense that the faintest puff
Twirls into trunk-paper the while you con it."
And, veritably, Sol is right enough.
The general tuckermanities are arrant
Bubbles- ephemeral and so transparent-
But this is, now- you may depend upon it-
Stable, opaque, immortal- all by dint
Of the dear names that he concealed within 't.

E.A.P. is literally saying the names are embedded within the poem. Set like stone. The poem is dedicated to Sarah anna lewis. the name is found by searching for the first letter of the first line and then the second letter of the second line and so on.. which is a code(?) he used in another one of his poems; a valentine. which is adressed to F-s S O-d (another poem) go figure it out yourself.

This poem is talking about Sarah Anna Lewis, a poetess that helped Poe through some hard times. This is a sonnet with iambic pentameter. He is saying that this poem has more substance within it than others, but given his last few lines, I would venture to guess that he is saying that the true meaning lies not within the lines, but in the name that he hid. It is immortal, because she is immortal, and knowing little fame in his own life, he has given longevity to his sonnet by attaching it to another artist.

He criticises the fluffy, pretty meanings of all other sonnets, while instilling within his own the name of a mysterious woman -Sara Hanna Lewis. Was there no form to the muses of the other sonnets? Is this a simple example of human arrogance? I don't know -thinks- The poem's heft, he says, comes from the name that forms it's diagonal ... strong form. Sara Hanna Lewis. I wish I knew more about this mysterious woman. Maybe this is the response Poe wished to elicit from his readers? Obviously she was of importance to him... Perhaps she supported him through all his drug escapades and his insanity? Funny thought. I don't know about this one ... except it is an odd, profound complement to Ms. Lewis.

I read this poem in the ninth grade for school. On the bottom of the page where it was, there was an explanation of what it meant. I remember that it has a hidden meaning. I know what the message is, but I can't remember what the type of poem it is. its a certain type. The message is read by reading the first letter of the first line, the second letter of the second line, third, forth, etc. Don't count spaces. Only letters. The message is a name. It's Sara Hanna Lewis. I dont remember what she has to do with anything, but I'm looking for the type of poem it is. If anyone knows what type of poem it is please email me.
