Bereft Analysis

Author: poem of Robert Frost Type: poem Views: 48

Where had I heard this wind before
Change like this to a deeper roar?
What would it take my standing there for,
Holding open a restive door,
Looking down hill to a frothy shore?
Summer was past and the day was past.
Sombre clouds in the west were massed.
Out on the porch's sagging floor,
Leaves got up in a coil and hissed,
Blindly striking at my knee and missed.
Something sinister in the tone
Told me my secret my be known:
Word I was in the house alone
Somehow must have gotten abroad,
Word I was in my life alone,
Word I had no one left but God.

Robert Frost's poetry always let you put yourself personally into what he writes. That is what makes his style so unique. For me, when I read this poem the fist time I was in a deep state of depression. I related so completely to what Frost was saying when he talked about the signs of change coming, this is when I knew I was going over the edge (because I had before) and that ultimately I was in the world alone in that no one could truly be where I was at that time. I was far away from family and friends, even my husband could not understand the dark tunnel I was going through. At the end of the poem Frost says, "word I was in my life alone, word I had no one left but God". On one hand the people around might have known something was wrong but they could not enter this world of depression with me. It is only God that is there taking me through it.

This poem is about a guy who lost someone he loves. He is suffered by someone's death and also loneliness.

lonleiness summons fear, but is he bereft of a person, or just bereft of the day...he certainly isnt bereft of melancholy----written by a drunken imbecile

Bereft doesn't mean to be taken away, it means to be in a state where something vital has been taken away from you. Bereft means you have been deprived of something of infinite value - it doesn't necessarily mean left alone. You can be bereft in the middle of a crowd of people.
And where are your readers getting the idea that it is about old age? He never once mentions age. It's certainly about loneliness, but even more about fear.
It seems to me that this poem is about the sudden vulnerability you feel when you have lost the person who loved you. As long as they were with you, you had a kind of magical protection from the world, now you are dreadfully exposed and vulnerable. Frost is saying that a vast and cruel universe senses your unprotectedness, and turns on you in an instant. Hence the metaphor of the leaves on the porch turning into a hissing snake. Think!

Bereft means to be taken away, left alone. That's the underlying theme in the poem, and about the past "Summer was past and day was past" line 6. Take note of the rhythm and meter also. Quite a few metaphors. Free verse structure and personification noted also.
