Love and Friendship Analysis

Author: Poetry of Emily Jane Brontė Type: Poetry Views: 898

Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree --
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most contantly?
The wild-rose briar is sweet in the spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who wil call the wild-briar fair?
Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly's sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He may still leave thy garland green.

this poem is very sweet and bronte is trying to say that love is not always true but friendship is much stronger than love.

.: Love vs friendship :.

I think love and friendship according to Bronte is both essential, as they affect human beings in every stage of life due to their lust and affection and also play with human emotion while they are being ingnored. When Bronte compares love and friendship 2gether, this denote the connection between the two elements in which people turn to friends, when love fades and people celebrate the glory of love while it is still sweet but moarn if love loses its faith. However, frienship starts to replace the painful feeling but often people do not realize its importance coz the 'wild-rose briar' is more beautiful than the 'holly tree' where nobody seems to notice its presence.

I almost forgot.. it also have an alliteration to the second stanza-" sweet in spring" "summer blossoms scent" which makes a calm and quiet sound. Bronte also used a personification at the last stanza- (December) "He still leave..."

This has 2 quatrains and 2 couplet- ABCB ABCB AB AB.
I really like this poem but from my point of view, i dont really agree that love wont last forever.. yes we may be hurt from love but remember there are love just we call love and there is one true love that only death can separate them

This simple yet profound poem conveys a message to all- that which is simpler may indeed be stronger than that which is beauiful and enchanting, but unreliable in it's beauty and enchantment. The rope of friendship hold tighter than that of love.

Emily Brontė decided to compare love and friendship using the example of rose-briar and holly. This rhyming verse poem has three stanzas, each with four lines of equal length. Love and Friendship follows the pattern abab.

Brontė suggests to her audience in the first stanza that love and friendship often don’t agree with each other, and that it is a case of what will be there in the end. The middle section of the poem continues using similes and metaphors connecting friendship with holly and love with the rose. The final stanza concludes that friendship will win the battle, and be long lasting over love.

I believe that Emily Bronte’s unique approach to comparing love and friendship is extremely effective in communicating her message, and the style in which it is written makes it interesting to read.
