I rise in the dawn, and I kneel and blow
Till the seed of the fire flicker and glow;
And then I must scrub and bake and sweep
Till stars are beginning to blink and peep;
And the young lie long and dream in their bed
Of the matching of ribbons for bosom and head,
And their day goes over in idleness,
And they sigh if the wind but lift a tress:
While I must work because I am old,
And the seed of the fire gets feeble and cold.

The poem is about a hard-working, poor old woman who compares herself to the young women of the house who spend their days dreaming of love and worrying about their appearance. It is not clear whether these young women are her own children or the children of people she works for as a maid. If one wanted to obtain a good grade in the study of this poem, as an English Teacher, I would recommend looking to Yeats's background as an Irishman for inspiration - could it be the case that the whole poem is a metaphor for Yeats's inferiority complex towards the more industrialised United Kingdom? The Old Mother could represent the impoverished peasantry and the seed of the fire represents the old order in Ireland. Worth exploring!

This poem is about a mother/old maid describing her daily routine, however there is a deeper meaning in the word 'dawn' and the last sentence. This emphasises her life being so ritualistic and how old she is and close to death even as it is flickering away. The children are described through her eyes as that of being careless and carefree with only the troubles of ribbons for their hair. It also goes on to say, how because she is older than the girls she must be the one to do the work.
