THIS gloomy northern day,
Or this yet gloomier night,
Has moved a something high
In my cold heart; and I,
That do not often pray,
Would pray to-night.

And first on Thee I call
For bread, O God of might!
Enough of bread for all, -
That through the famished town
Cold hunger may lie down
With none to-night.

I pray for hope no less,
Strong-sinewed hope, O Lord,
That to the struggling young
May preach with brazen tongue
Stout Labour, high success,
And bright reward.

And last, O Lord, I pray
For hearts resigned and bold
To trudge the dusty way -
Hearts stored with song and joke
And warmer than a cloak
Against the cold.

If nothing else he had,
He who has this, has all.
This comforts under pain;
This, through the stinging rain,
Keeps ragamuffin glad
Behind the wall.

This makes the sanded inn
A palace for a Prince,
And this, when griefs begin
And cruel fate annoys,
Can bring to mind the joys
Of ages since.

This Gloomy Northern Day by Robert Louis Stevenson: An In-Depth Literary Criticism and Interpretation

There is something about rainy days that brings out the poet in us. We wax lyrical about the pitter-patter of raindrops on the roof, the misty haze that envelops everything, and the melancholy mood that settles in our hearts. Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, This Gloomy Northern Day, is a perfect example of this poetic tradition. In this literary criticism and interpretation, we will delve into the themes, imagery, and language of this classic poem and explore its meaning and significance.

The Poem

This Gloomy Northern Day by Robert Louis Stevenson

This gloomy northern day, A pallid, leaden sky, A wintry wind that chills to the bone, A landscape brown and bare. But let the clouds part for a moment, And a gleam of sunshine breaks through. The hillsides light up with a golden glow, The world is transformed anew.

Themes

At its core, This Gloomy Northern Day is a poem about the transformative power of nature. The speaker describes a bleak, dreary day, with a leaden sky, wintry wind, and brown, barren landscape. But then, the clouds part, and a ray of sunshine breaks through, transforming the world into a golden-hued paradise. This juxtaposition of darkness and light, of despair and hope, is a recurring theme in Stevenson's work, as well as in literature in general.

Another theme that emerges from the poem is the idea of finding beauty in unexpected places. The speaker acknowledges the dreariness of the day, but then finds joy in the sudden burst of sunlight. This reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there is always the potential for beauty and happiness, if we are open to it.

Finally, there is a sense of nostalgia and longing in the poem, as the speaker reflects on the passing of time and the impermanence of life. The changing seasons and the fleeting moments of joy serve as reminders of our mortality and the importance of cherishing the present moment.

Imagery

Stevenson's use of imagery in This Gloomy Northern Day is simple yet powerful. He paints a picture of a desolate landscape with his descriptions of "pallid, leaden sky" and "landscape brown and bare." These images evoke a sense of sadness and despair, as if the world has been drained of all color and life.

But then, the sun breaks through the clouds, and the landscape is transformed into a "golden glow." This sudden burst of color and light is a vivid image that captures the transformative power of nature.

One of the most striking images in the poem is the idea of the "gleam of sunshine" breaking through the clouds. This image suggests that even the smallest glimmer of hope can have a profound impact on our outlook and mood.

Language

Stevenson's language in This Gloomy Northern Day is deceptively simple. His use of short, declarative sentences and plain language creates a sense of immediacy and intimacy, as if the speaker is speaking directly to the reader.

One of the most effective linguistic devices in the poem is the use of contrast. The stark contrast between the gloomy day and the sudden burst of sunshine creates a sense of drama and tension that draws the reader in.

Stevenson also uses repetition to great effect in the poem. The repeated use of the word "gloomy" emphasizes the bleakness of the day, while the repetition of the phrase "the world is transformed anew" underscores the transformative power of nature.

Interpretation

So what does This Gloomy Northern Day mean, exactly? At its most basic level, the poem is a celebration of the beauty and power of nature. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there is always the potential for hope and renewal.

But there is also a deeper, more philosophical message at play here. The poem speaks to the impermanence of life and the importance of cherishing the fleeting moments of joy that we encounter along the way. It encourages us to find beauty in unexpected places and to seek out the silver linings in even the darkest of clouds.

Finally, This Gloomy Northern Day is a reminder of the power of poetry itself. It shows us that even the simplest of words can have a profound impact on our emotions and our worldview. It encourages us to look at the world around us with fresh eyes and to find the poetry in our everyday lives.

Conclusion

In conclusion, This Gloomy Northern Day is a beautiful and powerful poem that speaks to the transformative power of nature, the importance of finding beauty in unexpected places, and the impermanence of life. With its vivid imagery, simple yet powerful language, and themes of hope and renewal, it is a timeless work of poetic art that continues to resonate with readers today.

Poetry This Gloomy Northern Day: A Masterpiece by Robert Louis Stevenson

As I sit here on this gloomy northern day, I cannot help but be reminded of the beautiful poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, aptly titled "This Gloomy Northern Day." This masterpiece of poetry is a true reflection of the human experience, capturing the essence of our emotions and the beauty of nature.

The poem begins with a description of the weather, setting the tone for the rest of the piece. The speaker describes the "gloomy northern day" with its "clouds that veil the sky" and "the rain that falls unceasingly." The imagery is vivid and powerful, painting a picture of a bleak and dreary day.

However, as the poem progresses, the speaker's tone shifts from one of despair to one of hope and optimism. The rain, which was once seen as a burden, is now described as a "blessing" that "brings life to the earth." The clouds, which once obscured the sky, are now seen as "a veil of mystery" that adds to the beauty of the day.

The poem's central theme is the idea that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. The speaker acknowledges the dreariness of the day, but also recognizes the beauty that can be found in it. This message is particularly relevant in today's world, where we are constantly bombarded with negativity and despair.

Stevenson's use of language is also noteworthy. The poem is written in a simple and straightforward style, yet it is incredibly powerful. The use of repetition, such as the repetition of the word "gloomy," adds to the poem's impact. The use of alliteration, such as "clouds that veil the sky," also adds to the poem's beauty.

The poem's structure is also interesting. It is written in four stanzas, each with four lines. The first and third lines of each stanza rhyme, as do the second and fourth lines. This creates a sense of symmetry and balance, which adds to the poem's overall beauty.

One of the most striking aspects of the poem is its ability to evoke emotion in the reader. As I read the poem, I am transported to a place of beauty and wonder, despite the dreariness of the day. I am reminded that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.

In conclusion, "This Gloomy Northern Day" is a masterpiece of poetry that captures the essence of the human experience. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. Stevenson's use of language and structure is masterful, creating a powerful and beautiful piece of literature. As I sit here on this gloomy northern day, I am grateful for the beauty that can be found in even the dreariest of days.
