I believe e.e. cummings left it up to you to interpret Its ok if you take different meanings from it. Consider the art of e.e cumming's period. It was abstractionist, as is his poetry. He even commented on Picasso.
Don't waste your time trying to copy anybody. Be who you are. let the mothers copy you.

I just want to say that I agree with the original person who talked about strangers meeting and staying together throughout their lives. Not that he other two are wrong..maybe that's part of it...but the poem refers to wedding vows and promises made...and a beginning of a new life together...it just seems that way..
keep in mind that I believe that a poem means what it means to you...so I think everyone is right :)

the poem describes the meeting of strangers and that fleeting instant where there is potential for anything and everything to happen because there are no preconceived notions. no lifelong friendship comes out of this particular meeting, but it impacted both strangers forever in that they will always remember it.
reading the poem is just like meeting a stranger as the poem itself sparks interests and then ends, yet the ambiguity in its message will touch any reader forever.

My analysis of this poem is quite different.
If strangers meet, fully complete in themselves, with no preconceptions (not poor, not rich, complete, no judgements no cruelty, they meet as themselves, they meet as two people aware) then the can touch one another deeply and be changed themselves forever.
once like a spark: alive, young, born,
and then to dark: death
and in between, we touch one another...

Strangers meet and go through the process of falling in love and marriage, then flashback to being strangers with just a touch and dying together.
